Guidebook, Not Memoir

A launch week note

Virtual Impact has been out for a little over a week now, and I want to use this space to say the thing I keep coming back to when people ask what the book actually is.

Go looking for resources on relocating, changing careers, or building a life outside your home country, and if you're not the default demographic the content assumes, you'll still find some representation. A video here, a story there. Pieces of yourself scattered across other people's highlight reels.

Representation matters. Actually, scratch that. Representation is necessary. It's just not sufficient.

What you won't find as often is an actual framework. Something with steps in it. Something you can act on instead of just feel good about for twenty minutes.

The framework, not the story

That gap is exactly why I wrote Virtual Impact as a guidebook, not a memoir. My story is in there: divorce, rebuilding a legal career across countries, practicing immigration law on both sides of the decision. But the story isn't the point. The framework built from it is.

That distinction has mattered more than I expected since launch day. The messages I've gotten haven't been about the parts of my life that show up in the book. They've been about:

• The exercises

• The questions people are sitting with

• What they're doing differently because a chapter gave them somewhere to start, instead of just something to relate to

The bet

That's the whole bet I made writing this book: that people don't need one more story that mirrors their own. They need something they can actually use.
